Michael Owen suggested that Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez were to blame after Roma completed an incredible comeback against Barcelona in their Champions League quarter-final.

Roma managed to overturn a 4-1 deficit after a disastrous first leg, with goals from Edin Dzeko, Daniele De Rossi and Kostas Manolas blowing Barca away at the Stadio Olimpico on Tuesday evening.

The Serie A outfit progressed through to the semi-finals of the competition courtesy of the away goals rule and will discover their next opponents during Friday’s draw.

Speaking after Roma’s stunning victory, BT Sport pundit Owen said: ‘It is incredible. When we look at the stats and everything that it tells us it is incredible, but your eyes don’t lie.

‘We looked at the game in the first leg… we’ve watched Barcelona for a number of months now and I’m not sure — even though they haven’t conceded many — I’m not sure you can not concede when you’ve got two strikers that don’t put anything into defending.

‘They are basically defending with eight outfield players against eleven and I’m not sure you can do that at the highest level.

‘You could argue that Roma aren’t at the highest level. There are teams that will exploit that even more. But no more, because Barca are out.’

Andres Iniesta admitted that he may have played his final Champions League match following Barcelona’s defeat.

‘It’s one of the possibilities and that’s why it hurts more,’ he told TV3.

‘It is a very painful elimination because nobody expected it because of the lead we had.

When you do things wrong, you make many mistakes and we did not adapt to the game.

‘It was a very big disappointment for the season we have had so far.’
